A Gospel That is Truly Good News – Part 2 | Stan Mitchell

Guest speaker Stan Mitchell continues his powerful series on **religious shame**, focusing on the pivotal narrative of Genesis 3. Mitchell challenges the traditional theological framework that defines the overarching human narrative as “sin, separation, sacrifice, and salvation”. Instead, he proposes a model centered on **shame, estrangement, loving divine presence, and healing. He emphasizes that the original authors of the sacred text chose to describe the pristine human soul (Eve) as being “naked and not ashamed,” highlighting the absence of shame over the absence of sin. This shift suggests that shame, defined as a “felt sense of separation that is not an indication of real separation,” is the core human malady.

Mitchell asserts that the first temptation was not a temptation to sin, but a temptation to shame. The serpent successfully lied to Eve, convincing her that she was not like God and lacked perfect union with her creator, leading to a chronic sense of intrinsic insufficiency. Her subsequent act of eating the fruit was thus characterized as Eve’s attempt to acquire by theft what she already possessed by gift. Using a personal story about his daughter, a “modern Eve,” Mitchell illustrates that shame, not sin, is the primary spiritual illness facing humanity. Mitchell concludes that if the church understands this truth, the proclamation of the gospel will be the healing of shame, reminding people that their identity is immutable, created in the image and likeness of God, and cannot be forfeited.
